The Napkin and its Double (in collaboration with Buzz Spector)
2006

“With whom would you like to collaborate?” asked Steve Clay. “Buzz Spector.”

Whereupon Clay pulled from a folder a cafeteria napkin on which Spector had drawn the diagram for a book, its pages torn incrementally—thus already accumulating textual depth.

Unbeknownst to Spector, I recreated his work by simulating all his lines, including bleeds in the successive unfolding of the napkin, and adding two elements: a frame and a pasted paper for each work of the edition on acetate, a phrase which read “Word Surfaces.”

On seeing this intervention, Spector named it The Napkin and Its Double.
